This is a guide on how to change the oil and oil filter on a Nissan 350Z.

Reminder: Remember, it is illegal to dispose of used motor oil improperly. Before doing this procedure, we recommend you find a local quick-lube place that will accept your dirty oil at no charge.

[edit] Instructions

  1. Warm up your vehicle, dirty oil comes out faster and easier when the oil is hot. However, be sure to allow a few minutes for oil to fully settle and drain internally after shutting it off. This will also help prevent burns from the hot oil.
  2. Loosen oil filler cap and pull out the oil dipstick, this will also speed up the flowing process.
  3. Jack up your car using an appropriate jack because the 350Z is a very low car. It's imperative that you apply the parking brake and block a rear wheel to prevent the car from rolling. Use jackstands to support the weight of the car (never depend on a jack, they can and do fail or slip!).
  4. Remove plastic panel that covers the bottom of the engine. It is held in place by screws and plastic clips.
  5. Remove the drain bolt and let the oil drain out completely in a suitable drainpan. Be careful not to burn yourself as the oil may be hot.
  6. Install the drain bolt and make sure you use a new copper drain plug gasket (Nissan uses a special copper drain plug that is around 2 mm thick, when you tighten the bolt, the washer thins out). You can get these at your Nissan Parts Counter for about $1 each. Tighten drain bolt at 29.4-39.2 NM or 22-28 FT-LB using a torque wrench.
  7. Remove oil filter using oil filter removal tool. You can buy one from Nissan, Part No. KV10115801, its just a simple oil filter wrench that fits perfectly on the oil filter. When installing the new filter apply some oil on the filter's O-ring. Tighten the oil filter at 14.7-20.5 NM or 11-15 FT-LB (Do not overtighten!).
  8. Wipe off visible oil on the filter and drain bolt area. Re-install plastic cover.
  9. Lower vehicle after clearing everything from underneath. Once lowered, remove wheel chock as long as vehicle parking brake is set.
  10. Add new oil , 4.7 liters (~5 quarts) of new engine oil (use a funnel, it helps). Start the engine and let it run for a couple minutes. Stop engine, check for leaks, and add additional oil if necessary until the oil level is centered (between low and high) on the dipstick.
