From WikiAutoRepair
Reminder: Remember, it is illegal to dispose of used motor oil improperly. Before doing this procedure, we recommend you find a local quick-lube place that will accept your dirty oil at no charge.
Contents |
[edit] Tools Needed
- Rubber gloves
- Piece of cardboard
- Oil drain pan
- Ramp stands if your Jeep is too low for you to climb underneath
- Funnel
[edit] Supplies Needed
- New oil
- 5 quarts for 2.5L
- 6 quarts for 4.0L
- New filter
- Oil change pan (or some other container to catch the oil)
- Oil filter wrench
- 5/8 inch socket or wrench
[edit] Instructions
- Put on the rubber gloves to help keep clean.
- If there isn't enough clearance to work under your Jeep, prop your Wrangler on the ramp stands.
- Warm up your vehicle, dirty oil comes out faster and easier when the oil is hot. However, be sure to allow a few minutes for oil to fully settle and drain internally after shutting it off. This will also help prevent burns from the hot oil.
- Open the hood and loosen the oil filler cap and pull out the oil dipstick, this will also speed up the flowing process.
- Attempt to position the oil drain pan under where the oil will come out.
- Now open the plug. You'll see that the oil comes out with a small amount of force, usually ending up somewhere other than your oil catch pan.
- Also, remove the oil filter. Hopefully, you can just use your hand to remove it - if not, use your oil filter wrench.
- Now, you've gotten the old oil out of the system, and are ready to replace it with new. Take your new oil filter, open one of the new bottles of oil, and rub some oil onto the rubber gasket of the new oil filter. This will help the filter to seat properly.
- Use a funnel and pour in your oil leaving it about 0.3 quarts low. You'll want to replace the oil cap, start the Jeep, and let it idle for a minute or so. Turn it off, and check the oil level - it will probably be low. Pour some more oil in, and repeat. We are going for 5 quarts for the 2.5L, and 6 quarts for the 4.0L, but we don't want to overfill the crankcase either.
