  1. Remove shift knob by pulling straight up. There should not be any screws securing the knob. This is for an automatic transmission only.
  2. When the knob comes off, you will see the top of a white plastic rod. Attempt to pull it out. If it comes out, the rod is broken.
    • You may be able to shift gears temporarily and get “un-stranded” by using your thumb to press the rod down and unlock the movement in and out of 1st and Park.
    • The dealer will advise replacement of entire shifter assembly which can be costly.
  3. A cheaper fix is to cut something of similar but slightly larger width/thickness to the approximate length of the plastic rod you pulled out in step 2 (such as a chopstick) or plastic dowel.
  4. Insert one end into the base of the shift knob and ensure that when the lockout button is depressed, the rod is forced down (it pushes the rod down about 1/4th inch).
  5. Put the shift knob back in place with the dowel attached. Test the lockout button. If the dowel was cut to the correct length and width, you should be able to freely shift.
