[edit] Instructions

  1. Unplug the wires going into the distributor cap, be sure to remember which wire goes to which terminal or your car will not start if they are wrong, and you can damage the ignition coil by attempting to start it like this.
  2. Take one wire off the distributor cap at a time and attach them to the new distributor cap while the new cap is sitting off to the side.
  3. Remove the 3 bolts that hold the plastic cap to the metal distributor.
  4. Pull off the old cap and toss it out.
  5. To remove the rotor, there is a set screw holding it on from the side. It may not be visible due to the rotor not being at the correct position.
  6. Make sure to use the proper Philips head screwdriver size as the bolt easily strips out.
  7. If the screw is not accessible then you can turn the engine via the 17mm crank pulley/harmonic balancer bolt (counter-clockwise looking from driver side of the car), or you can remove the 3 bolts holding the distributor on and pull the distributor off to turn the inside of the distributor from the back side.
  8. Have a rag handy as oil will leak out of the head where the distributor was. This is also a good time to replace the distributor o-ring.
  9. If you remove the distributor mark the position of the distributor with a marker around the bolts' washers, or you will have to check/adjust your ignition timing with timing light.
  10. Remove the rotor by pulling it away from the distributor. It is on a shaft and slides off of it.
  11. Put the new rotor on and reinstall the set screw. Be careful not to strip the screw.
  12. Put the new cap back on and replace the bolts.
  13. Plug the spark plug wires into the appropriate terminal on the new cap if you haven't done so already as an optional step.
