[edit] Tools Needed
- 4 Jack Stands
- Floor Jack
- Bungee Cord
- Ratchet Wrench
- Wood Blocks
- Tire iron
[edit] Supplies Needed
- New brake pads
- Brake fluid
- Caliper grease
[edit] Instructions
- Loosen the front lug nuts and jack up the front of the Civic.
- Make sure to support the vehicle with jack stands.
- Remove the Civic’s front lug nuts and pull the wheels from the vehicle.
- Remove the front caliper bolts, there are two of them and they are on the rear of the caliper. You must hold the sleeve with a combination wrench while loosening the caliper bolt with a ratchet and socket.
- Pull the caliper from the Civic’s brake assembly, exposing the brake pads. Secure the brake caliper to a suspension component with a bungee cord. Don’t allow the caliper to hang by its hose.
- Pull the brake pads from the caliper bracket and compress the caliper piston with a C-clamp. Make sure to use an old brake pad between the C-clamp and the piston to avoid damaging the piston.
- Pull the old brake pad retainers–the metal shim in the caliper bracket–out and replace them with new shims.
- Put a thin coat of anti-rattle grease on the rear of the new brake pads and and place the pads on the caliper bracket.
- Place the caliper back over the brake pads and tighten the caliper bolts to 36 foot-pounds.
- Reinstall the wheels and hand-tighten the lug nuts. Lower the Civic to the ground and torque the wheels to 80 foot-pounds.
- Pump the brake pedal several times until the pedal feels firm and then test drive the Civic.
