This is a guide on how to change the oil and oil filter on a Honda CR-V 1996-2001.

  1. Warm up your vehicle, dirty oil comes out faster and easier when the oil is hot. However, be sure to allow a few minutes for oil to fully settle and drain internally after shutting it off. This will also help prevent burns from the hot oil.
  2. Pick out a flat spot to park your vehicle, turn of the engine, put the car in gear, and set the parking brake firmly.
  3. Put on old clothes and disposable gloves to help you keep clean.
  4. Line up your tools.
  5. Raise the hood
  6. Loosen oil filler cap and pull the dipstick and check the oil level and quality.
  7. Leave out the oil dipstick, this will also speed up the flowing process.
  8. Jack up the car. It's imperative that you apply the parking brake and block a rear wheel to prevent the car from rolling. Use jackstands to support the weight of the car (never depend on a jack, they can and do fail or slip!).
  9. Cover the ground under the engine with cardboard and newspapers.
  10. Place drainpan under the oil drain plug.
  11. Using the wrench or socket, loosen up the oil drain plug and remove it completely with your gloved hand.
  12. Let the oil drain out completely into drainpan. Be careful not to burn yourself as the oil may be hot.
  13. Examine the drain plug to see if it is in good condition. Also, if you have an aluminum or synthetic washer and if it got beat, get a new one.
  14. Remove oil filter using oil filter removal tool. Its just a simple oil filter wrench that fits perfectly on the oil filter.
  15. Wipe out any excess oil around the surfaces where the old oil filter was.
  16. Rub clean oil on the rubber and threads of the new oil filter to make sure it seals tight.
  17. Install the new oil filter on the cleaned area. Make sure you put the oil plug back on.
  18. Lower vehicle after clearing everything from underneath. Once lowered, remove wheel chock as long as vehicle parking brake is set.
  19. Add new oil to your car using a funnel. Put 3.5 quarts and check the oil level. If it needs more, add the rest of the oil.
  20. Start the engine and let it run for a couple minutes. Stop engine, check for leaks, and add additional oil if necessary until the oil level is centered (between low and high) on the dipstick.
  21. Take the oil drain pan and the empty milk bottles and the funnel and pour the oil into it. When most of the oil has found the bottom of the bottle, seal it with the lid, then wipe out the inside of the funnel with a clean rag.
  22. Test drive, check for leaks and take the old oil with you to properly dispose of it.
